Learning to Dive

Well after not being blogging for soo long it was easier said then done to say I was going to blog every day during vacation. Have been doing a good job staying off the computer and enjoying peace and quiet.

The first full day was almost a typhoon but luckily it just pounded us with rain and lots of wind. We took a walk during one lull in the rain and wind and almost got back to the resort before the skies opened up.

We are learning Scuba Diving and by the end of the week will have our Open Water PADI certifications. Pei Lin has been doing better then I, but we are both enjoying it. I did freak out a little when practicing removing my mask, cleaning, replacing, and emptying it. But got it down pat after a few tries. Had Pei Lin laughing underwater when we were practicing our buddy breathing. Just hope he doesn’t laugh if we ever really have to use that technique.

Till next time…

What’s This About

October 1 is China’s National Day and one of the three “Golden Weeks” or holiday periods that take place each year. The other two are Chinese New Year and May 1 which is Labor Day. This blog, my first in quiet awhile, is the first one of our first day of our October 1 vacation.

Yesterday was a long, but productive, day. We flew out of Hong Kong to Manila last night and I didn’t think arrived into Manila that late. But I guess everything closes early in the shopping area around our hotel as at 10:30pm there wasn’t much open. Actually that was a good thing as we were both tired and wanted to crash and after a walk to acquaint ourselves with our surrounding.

This morning we walked through one of the large shopping malls across the street from our hotel and had lunch at Outback. Yep, the American Australian themed restaurant… We both love ribs and they do have good ribs! We both ordered iced tea, mine unsweetened and Pei Lin’s sweetened and when the drinks were delivered Pei Lin said “What’s this about??”. My glass was easily twice the size of his but I tried to appease him by saying it was an optical illusion as his glass while shorter is much wider then my tall and thin glass so they both held the same amount of liquid. He didn’t buy my rationale and soon enough his attitude passed.

It’s a whole nother blog about the skinny man drinking sugar tea and the fat man drinking unsweetened tea…

Unfortunately, we didn’t have a chance to explore any of Manila as we had a flight to catch and off we were to catch a domestic flight to Caticlan. The airport was packed and no where to sit. Pei Lin didn’t care for the airport, not that I liked it but at least it was clean and had some decent restaurants - even though we didn’t eat as we were both full from our ribs and iced tea lunch. He said it was too crowded but I think it wasn’t half as crowded as many of the Chinese bus and train stations I have been in.

While waiting for our flight, our names were paged and we were asked to take an earlier flight, which was a nice surprise. We had a short 30 minute flight to Caticlan and it was the most windy and roughest landing on the shortest runway I have ever experienced. At least it did have a two story control tower… We had to turn and taxi back down the runway to the terminal which was a single room building that was about the size of the average hotel room. At least it had bathrooms…

Our bags were the first two to be off loaded due to our getting on an earlier flight, so they were the first two put on the cart which means there were the last two to be uncovered. The good thing was since there were only 30 people on our flight there weren’t covered by too many bags. But the claiming system was a little crazy. They called the claim check number and until that bag was claimed they wouldn’t call the next bag. Was faster then waiting for a bag at any US airport but seemed much too complicated. But what is 15 minutes on the first real day of vacation?

After claiming our bags, we met our escort to the island of Boracay and our guesthouse. Pei Lin, me, our escort, our bellboy and our 2 bags all squeezed into a motorcycle with an enclosed sidecar. Was a fun ride. It has been raining two days none stop, the dirt road was pure mud, our bike had bald tires (tires with the tread worn down) and was fully loaded with the four of us. As we started up a hill the bike slipped out of gear and died. The driver patiently restarted and climbed another meter or two before the bike gave up and died. Long line of bikes and vans behind us didn’t utter one horn beep while we got out and walked along side our bike as the driver and bellboy pushed it up the hill a bit further. We found a dry spot, hopped in at the direction of the driver and he managed to get us to the top of the hill and down the other side to the ferry port in one piece.

The ferry port was a well choregraphed taxi line. There were half a dozen boats that held 20 or so passengers and been modified with “spider legs”, to keep them from capsizing in rough seas, loading and unloading people. We followed our escort and left our bags to the care of our bellboy and climbed aboard our water rickshaw. It was about a 20 minute ride to our destination, Boracay. Upon arrival we embarked down a ladder and into water about 3 feet deep. Pei Lin said “OH” and was promptly picked up and walked to shore upon the shoulders of one of water rickshaw’s porters. Unfortunately, he had the camera and I couldn’t snap a photo, but it was priceless.

After a muddy ride to our home for a week, we checked in, took a walk along the beach and returned to our beachside inn to order dinner. Ten minutes or so after we sat down some people came in and sat down next to us and were promptly served some bread. Pei Lin and I looked at each other and said, “What’s that about??”

Hope to write each day over the next week about our vacation and new country on our list.

Frantic Search & Restless Sleep

Saturday night as I was preparing to head into Hong Kong to stay the evening before my flight I had a scare. Earlier that morning I packed my suitcase and had all my clothes ready but waited until later to get my rolling briefcase straightened away. As I started to get ready to head out I couldn’t find my laptop. Panic ensued as I frantically started throwing things around trying to find it under a pillow, some dirty clothes or all the odds and ends we hadn’t yet put away. Pei Lin ran down to the parking garage to check in the car, wasn’t there. I was sure it was stolen, but where. I called our office admin manager to see if the maint. guy could meet me at the office if my chance I forgot to take my computer home. Thankfully, it was there… I had turned it off but just didn’t take it home. I think that is the first time in almost 5 years I have left my computer at work and on the one occasion where I absolutely had to have it. The panic subsided and I headed into HK for the evening before my Sunday morning flight.

Flight was uneventful, which was nice. Sat next to a guy who said “hello” and not much else until we landed and just before deplaning. Was fine by me. Although I prefer somewhere between the non-stop yakker and no-words at all.

Didn’t sleep very well last night. I thought with not getting much sleep on the flight over I just might be able to sleep decently but didn’t happen. One nice solid three hour stretch then up every hour or so and finally up for good about 4:30.

It is early Monday morning in the US and just got back from working out. Yep, you read that correctly. I worked out this morning. 20 minutes on the treadmill, 10 minutes on the elyptical machine and 5 minutes with some hand weights. First morning in the US and the plan is to do that everyday for the trip. Time to get serious about getting some weight off.

Off to see the wizard…Well, actually to see the boss.

The Floating Hole

the-floating-holenumber-14.jpg We woke early Friday morning and flew from Seattle to Spokane and then headed 45 minutes due east to Couer d’Alene, Idaho where many of my cousin’s have gathered for the wedding of my cousin, Karen. Arrived after the men had headed out to play golf so we checked in and went out to find them. Pei Lin has never played golf and I am a hack, so we just drove around with them for a little while and took some photos. Took a boat tour around the lake, well at least a very small portion of the lake. Some beautiful homes but just like Shenzhen the prices have skyrocketed over the last few years and are out of reach of most. Guess all the Microsoft millionaires are taking advantage of the short and cheap flights from Seattle and finding a way to spend their stock options.

Pei Lin had fun driving the golf cart. Was worried he was going to crash the not so cheap cart but somehow we managed to not wind up in the lake. He is going to take driving licenses and get his driver’s license when we get back to Shenzhen. Not sure I will be driving with him anytime soon though based on our experience yesterday!

I had lunch with some of my family and sat in the resort’s lobby and just chatted while Pei Lin took a rest. After awhile I joined him and had an awesome nap before dinner.

Since the occasion for us being here was my cousin’s wedding we were invited to attend the rehearsal dinner. There were 46 of us eating at a great Italian restaurant. I was glad I had met most of Mike’s (Karen’s soon to be husband) family in November. Everyone was so excited to meet and welcome Pei Lin to the USA. I hope he felt as welcomed as I did during our visit over Chinese New Year to his hometown. Had a great evening and was asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.

Not Sleepless in Seattle

I love going back in time. This morning we left Hong Kong at 8am and arrived in Seattle at 7:45am! It is the simple things in life that bring me joy.

Didn’t sleep much on the flight and when we arrived early we had to wait 20 minutes to deplane while we waited for the US Customs and Immigration officers to start their shift. Pei Lin breezed through immigration and was given a 6 month stay! We just had to talk to 4 different Customs officers after claiming our bags. Watching how arrogant and rudely these officers treat the passengers on our flight as well as us I couldn’t help but think these guys are all on power trips. Oh well, on such a special day I wasn’t going to let them ruin my mood.

We checked into our hotel and then went exploring the city. Was fun watching Pei Lin soak up his first American city. I also enjoyed watching the people, comparing the differences in my native country and China which has become my home. Unfortunately, we only had 1 day in Seattle and head to Idaho early tomorrow morning to my cousin’s wedding this weekend and catching up with family I haven’t seen in 4 or 5 years.

Off to take a short nap before waking at 4:30 for our early morning flight…
